E Main Street ~ 1899
The present day McCormick
Hardware, had its beginning in a store owned by Steele Cox, and
was named Cox Brothers, Sons and Company. Founded in 1899,
the store did a thriving business supplying the oil and gas
industry in the first years of the century.
In 1918, J. L. McCormick
purchased the business and operated it until 1949, a period of
31 years. James Hall purchased the store in 1949, and was
assisted by his father, Virgil O. Hall,, who had spent 42 years
in the hardware field before coming to McCormick's to assist Jim
in 1951.
George Frame purchased the
business in 1972. Along with employees Richard Devericks,
Guy Smith, Dorothy Kelley, Ramona Grimm, and others, George ran
the business until it was sold to Clayce and Dee Spurlock in
1989.
Clayce and Dee operated the
business for approximately one year and sold it to Waine
Nicholson. Shortly after purchasing the business, Waine
moved it into the present building. Prior to that move,
the store had always been located net to the Star Furniture
store. Waine operated the business for 14 years and sold
it to Ed and Paula Cumpston in March, 2004.
Ed and Paula have expanded
the business beyond its traditional hardware core to include a
thriving farm and feed supply business. The store has also
gone full-circle and is now supplying the oil and gas industry
as it did in its beginning years under Cox Brothers, Sons and
Company. (from: McCormick entry in the
